Saving Money by Meal Planning
I love that the New Year means new resolutions, new goals, and a fresh start! What I don't love is the feeling we get when I realize I've not kept up with my resolutions, and I find myself slacking big time. The simple fact is that often times we set ourselves up for failure from the get-go by taking on way too much all too quickly. I want to help you tackle saving money in the new year in a way that is managable and that will make a difference to your bottom line when 2013 rolls around.

I'd encourage you to break up your resolutions and goals into bite size chunks, and spread them out over time. Statistics show that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. With this plan you'll add one new resolution to your plate each month of the year thus forming great habits all year long! Trust me - it's a lot less painful this way, and at the end of the year you'll be in much better shape financially, which will feel great! Today I'll share the money saving tip for January, and in the months to come we'll tackle topics such as budgeting, how to know when a sale is really a sale, when to stock up on a particular item, why you shouldn't treat your tax return like a savings plan, and much more!

This month I'd like to encourage you to tackle meal planning. "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." Basically, it is as simple as you make it. I try to sit down each week, usually on Saturday or Sunday with the store ads to see what is on sale, then I make my meal plan based on these deals. Of course I use whatever I have in my pantry and freezer first then buy as needed the extras. Also, if there is something I see that is a “stockpile price,” I will add that to my list for future week’s meals plans.

Why Meal Plan?

  • It’s healthier. Meal planning allows you to think in advance about preparing a meal adding a key ingredient from each food group instead of throwing something together last minute that is maybe carb laden.

  • Saves money. If you go grocery shopping with a list, you will be more likely to avoid impulse purchases. Also it gives you the time to organize and sort your coupons BEFORE you shop.

  • Saves time. I can’t stress this enough. While it may seem tedious to sit down and plan out your meals for the week. It is much more time efficient than standing in front of the fridge or pantry blankly staring at the shelves of food, while you think “There is nothing in this house to eat!” Either you will just grab something out to eat, or you will end up making several small weekly trips to the grocery store to grab key ingredients that had you meal planned you would have already had on hand.

Tips for successful Meal Planning:

  • Use those leftovers! Plan it into your Meal Plan. I enjoy cooking, but the truth is at the end of the day sometimes I am just not in the mood or I am just plain tired. I try to plan ahead for these nights, if I know I will be working until 6 on Wednesday, I will plan a meal on Tuesday that can carry over. Or I will double up on cooking the ground beef the night before so we can use it in another meal.

From Love Food Hate Waste I found the following statistics:

    Each DAY we waste…

    1 Million Slices of Ham
    1.3 Million Yogurts
    7 Million Slices of Bread
    5.1 Million Potatoes
    1.6 Million Bananas
    4.4 Million Apples
    2.8 Million Tomatoes

  • Use Rice/Potatoes/Pasta as the base for your meal. If you can build the main part of your meal around a grain, you will save money and fill up on less. Use small amounts of meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. Of course I would suggest whole wheat grains to get the maximum nutritional value.

  • Plan snacks around nutritionally sound choices. This helps your budget because as we know, typically fruit, veggies, granola, etc enable your body to go longer stretches between meals as opposed to it’s sugar enemy – fruit snacks, candy, juice, etc. The denser the snack the more bang for your buck and almost always this is the cheaper option anyway!

  • Eat before you shop. Do not go grocery shopping when you are hungry. The best time to go is after you have had a good meal, or at least a snack to hold you over. When you are hungry, you are much more likely to pick up impulse purchases which can just throw your food budget out the window!

Let’s Practice.

Step 1: Make 3 Lists; Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Breakfast
Monday – Cereal, OJ, and Fruit
Tuesday – Oatmeal, Milk, and Toast
Wednesday – Scrambled Eggs and Toast, Milk or OJ
Thursday – Cereal, OJ and Fruit
Friday – Bagels & OJ
Saturday – French Toast and Sausage
Sunday – Cereal, OJ and Toast

Lunch
Monday – Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Tuesday – Tuna & Crackers/Sandwich, Fruit and Yogurt
Wednesday – Bean/Cheese Burritos with Chips & Salsa
Thursday – PB&J, Fruit, Pretzels and Yogurt
Friday – Macaroni & Cheese and Fruit
Saturday – Leftover Pizza
Sunday – Smorgasbord, what sounds good?!

Dinner
Monday - Lasagna, Corn and Garlic Bread
Tuesday - Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, Pot Stickers and Chinese Fried Rice (make extra rice)
Wednesday – Chicken Enchiladas and Spanish Rice (using extra rice from Tuesday) (make extra chicken)
Thursday – Shredded BBQ Chicken Sandwiches and Potato Salad (make extra)
Friday – Pizza (Eating Out)
Saturday - Hotdogs, Potato Salad and 5 Bean Salad
Sunday - Broiled Salmon, Brown Rice and Asparagus

Step 2: Prepare Ingredient List and head to your pantry & fridge. Cross things off as you find them or leave the ingredients on your list, you now have your shopping list! Make sure to pull out any coupons you have and put them all together in a place where you can find them easily.

Step 3: Go shopping and save! The best part is because you've planned ahead, without even trying you'll have saved money. You won't head to the store on a weeknight at 5 pm for a "few ingredients" and come home having spent $50 or worse. You're saving loads of time because everything you need is accessible when you need it, no more wasted trips to the store or to a restaurant for takeout.

Now, it's your turn. Please share your best meal planning tips. And resolve to save money in 2012!

I agree 100% with your suggestions.  Tried and true they are. I would only add that I now put my grocery list on my phone notepad so I always have it and it is not forgotten.  Interesting Blog, glad I found it.

  • Deanne Simonson 28 Jan, 10:13 AM

Thank you. I like the suggestions.
  • jaimee wood 28 Jan, 10:15 AM

I agree- I always save more money when I meal plan, plus things are always a little bit calmer for us, since Mommy's not running around last minute trying to throw something together before we just give up and order pizza!
  • Lisa D 28 Jan, 10:15 AM

I really need to do this
  • Laura Gordon 28 Jan, 10:16 AM

awesome tips! I always try to carry over meals and make double batches to either freeze or carry over for another night! Having leftover night once a week is big in our house too!
  • Danae 28 Jan, 10:17 AM

We are really good about breakfast and lunch when it comes to planning, but need to work on the dinner part! Our biggest problem is not having a large freezer...it really limits what I can stock up on meat wise and this seems to affect dinner the most.
  • Marisa 28 Jan, 10:17 AM

Planning ahead for the week is great, it really helps me to stick to healthy choices.
  • Tricia Undewood 28 Jan, 10:18 AM

    I love Grocery Outlet!
  • Jessica Tyquiengco 28 Jan, 10:20 AM

Thanks for the info. I have a deeper appreciation for the little things.

  • Kristina Lewis 28 Jan, 10:24 AM

I try to plan meals where I'm not cooking every week night. I'll slow cook pork for enchiladas one night, and carry over for pulled pork sammies the next!
  • jean 28 Jan, 10:28 AM

I've been conscious of not throwing away food for the last year or so.  Lately it has been to use the chicken carcass or ham bone to make soup so I'm using every bit I can.  Also, I will plan ahead what I will use with the leftovers - like fajitas, tacos, or chicken pot pie.
  • Julie Snyder 28 Jan, 10:29 AM

I find myself not dreading cooking after a long day at work as much if I have a meal plan. Since I know what I'm cooking before hand I have the frozen items thawed and sometimes the ingredients prepped before I even get home. That way, when we're ready for dinner I just throw everything together and cook it!
  • Emily Romero 28 Jan, 10:44 AM

    Thanks for the great ideas!!
  • C Barr 28 Jan, 10:45 AM

We try to have leftovers for the next day.
  • Terka Lerka 28 Jan, 10:53 AM

you are so awesome it's frightening.
  • Markisha Cotton 28 Jan, 10:58 AM

That is great! Id love to do this but my boyfriend is so picky that we decide dinner for the next day the night before based on what sounds good. Id love to plan it out ahead of time!
  • Dot Quaid 28 Jan, 11:10 AM

I plan ahead by making sure I have plenty of stock on hand for meals, planned or last minute. There are some days I just don't feel like cooking, so having something in the freezer or pantry I can whip up last minute serves us well....
  • Judy 28 Jan, 11:42 AM

Love shopping at Grocery Outlet, lots of savings, great bargins!
  • Sue 28 Jan, 11:59 AM

  • Stephanie DeMore 28 Jan, 12:27 PM

This has really inspired me to plan out our meals. :)
  • Dineen 28 Jan, 12:49 PM

I love meal planning, but don't seem to keep it going for more than a couple weeks at a time. Also, I can never cook enough to have left overs. I would really love to, and sometimes I even manage to get the extra put away...but it is always gone by the next day before I can use it for a meal. How would you deal with the issue of one or more persons continuing to eat just because its there...and of course its good?
  • Tina S 28 Jan, 12:55 PM

I love your ideas. It is always easier if I plan our meals out in advance. Not to mention cheaper then running to the store to pick up last minute items.
  • Nichole Johnston 28 Jan, 01:00 PM

Meal planning has made such a difference in my monthly budget, so has TFF! I love these tips and ideas, and was shocked to see how much waste there is every day.
  • Karen 28 Jan, 01:01 PM

Thanks for the great ideas! I would also like to be more diligent with written meal plans. While the habits of making extra batches ahead and freezing has been working well enough, it can be improved. And, I'd like to use more seasonal produce and flash freeze extras ahead in the coming seasons.
  • Sue C. 28 Jan, 01:11 PM

Great advise.  Meal planning has not only helped me to save money and take the surprise/stress out of "what's for dinner?", it's also helped me with losing weight since it helps me keep on track and know I have something planned for every meal so less "falling off the wagon".
  • candice 28 Jan, 01:20 PM

    Thanks for the menu ideas.
  • Krissa 28 Jan, 02:52 PM

  • Kerri 28 Jan, 03:56 PM

Meal planning makes cooking so much easier!
  • Sherri 28 Jan, 04:09 PM

I have been planning meals and preparing a shopping list for a couple of years now. Like anything, it takes a little up-front time in planning meals for a week, but it's worth it in the end because of the savings! The only difference in my menu is I don't plan my meals around a grain. I follow a gluten, dairy and refined sugar-free diet, so my out-of-pocket expense on some items may be higher. We actually eat more meat and vegetables than anything else. Occasionally we'll eat a gluten-free starch, but not often. I've learned to cut down costs by making my own gluten-free items at home rather than buy the pre-packaged stuff from the stores.

I follow the same set of rules (e.g. shopping list) before I go out and shop at pharmacies on Sundays. My rule of thumb is if it's not on sale and I don't have coupons to match, I won't buy. I keep a price spreadsheet on everything I buy, so I know what is a good price.

Thanks for sharing your tips...keep them coming because I enjoy learning from you. :)
  • Jean A 28 Jan, 04:10 PM

Thanks for the deals at Grocery Outlet
  • Lisa M. 28 Jan, 04:46 PM

    Thanks for the tips!!!
  • Heather 28 Jan, 05:02 PM

    Thank you I needed this.
  • Julie M 28 Jan, 06:10 PM

I Love this, have I have tried it in the past and it worked so well, not sure why I stopped, but it's about to begin again!
  • Libby 28 Jan, 06:28 PM

I always shop with a grocery list.  The only things I will buy otehr then what is on my list are things that happen to be on the wall of values that are a great price and fit into my family meal planning in the future.
Another great hint is use that frezzer space up- boxes of items not open  like hamburger helper, rice a roni and oatmeal can go into the freezer so they dont spoil or get mealy.
  • Halima H. 28 Jan, 06:59 PM

Thank you for the great advice! I especially appreciate your advice to use leftovers. It breaks my heart knowing how much food is wasted everyday when there are so many people who go without.
  • Lisa C. 28 Jan, 07:11 PM

I agree that meal planning is a smart idea.  It saves the stress of wondering "what's for dinner" while I'm sitting at work that day.  And I feel so bad - I'm one of the people who wastes bananas.  I need to freeze them and make banana bread!!
  • Mindy 28 Jan, 07:12 PM

Love this post. But I always base my meals around veggies, not grains.
  • Emily 28 Jan, 07:18 PM

    Thank you!
  • Debbie 28 Jan, 07:26 PM

Grocery Outlet may not take coupons like some stores but if you know your prices, you can get some amazing deals. I shop there first then the sales at the regular stores.
  • Jenelle 28 Jan, 07:54 PM

Awesome thanks for the tips on meal planning.
  • Sue 28 Jan, 07:56 PM

    Love Grocery Outlet!

I always try to use leftovers... I also use my crockpot a lot... makes me feel like I really didn't have to cook dinner! :)
  • Carly Perez 28 Jan, 08:30 PM

Thanks for this! I know and usually do most of these things but have gotten out of the habit! Even though planning takes some time, I ALWAYS save money and ultimately time throughout my week. The added stress of trying to come up with something for dinner each day is also lessened when I plan it out! Renewed habits here I come! :)

  • Sue 28 Jan, 10:02 PM

    Great advice! Thank you :)
  • Kim 28 Jan, 10:02 PM

    Thanks for the tips!
  • Gina H. 28 Jan, 10:59 PM

Wow it's shocking how much food we waste. Great tips on meal planning. I think it does help reduce the waste. Thanks.
  • Joyce Moy 28 Jan, 11:39 PM

I love meal planning. A tip? There are a lot of great ones on here already, but I think one piece of advice I have is to have a back up to the plan. You never know if unexpected surprises come up and you can't or don't have time to make what you originally planned.
  • jolene 29 Jan, 05:51 AM

We never throw away food ingredients!  For meal planning, the veggie or chilled item that is nearest expiration in our 'fridge is "nominated" as the star in tonight's meal plan!
  • Kimberly B. 29 Jan, 06:13 AM

I have not done meal planning before, but it sounds like it is time to start with all of the benefits listed. i know we spend way more money than if I planned our meals.
  • Kari 29 Jan, 06:47 AM

I have a hard time planning an entire week at a time. I use most of what's in the refrigerator though. I can get very creative with "not a lot"!
  • shopfreak 29 Jan, 07:20 AM

Great tips, I've been wanting to try this out. Thanks!

  • Sarah W. 29 Jan, 03:25 PM

    Awesome tips!
  • Erica K. 29 Jan, 03:30 PM

Excellent ideas. I've tried planning to have the same thing each day of every week (e.g., Wednesday is pasta) and that's working well. Now to amp it up a little and plan more in advance!
  • Sarah 29 Jan, 05:02 PM

Great ideas on meal planning! I'll give it a try!

  • Kassie Cerami 29 Jan, 09:59 PM

    Excellent!
  • Kathleen Hafely 29 Jan, 10:00 PM

    Great ideas! Thank you!!
  • Bonnie K 29 Jan, 11:09 PM

As much as it is a good idea to do meal plans, I really don't like doing it. I keep plenty on hand in my pantry. I cook based on what I have on hand. If there's a recipe involving meat, then I will go to the store and get what I need. I live very close to the grocery store.
  • Karen 30 Jan, 08:48 AM

Yes- leftovers are very important to reuse. It is good to do meal planning, but i am single without a family and do not like eating hte same thing every day. i wonder if theres a blog for people like that (recipes for single servings only) and slow cooker recipes for my 5 cup slow cooker. lol
  • Milyssa Gossom 30 Jan, 09:12 AM

    thanks!
  • Camiele 30 Jan, 09:30 AM

    Great tips!
  • Amanda Ackerman 30 Jan, 10:59 AM

no need to ever waste bananas.  If they are too ripe, they can be frozen and are good for banana bread or just frozen and pureed as a banana sorbet. Yum
  • Brenda 30 Jan, 12:13 PM

Time to get started on meal planning. We have become pretty healthy over the past few years, now need to get a plan in order to make the dinner chaos at 4pm non-existent! Thanks!!
  • Melinda S 30 Jan, 12:28 PM

I can join the list for wasting yogurt, potatoes and tomatoes. I am starting to work more with coupons and will use the sale flyers to, ok, actually write down a meal plan. Thank you for this blog - I'm enjoying it.

  • Kimberly Johnson 30 Jan, 12:55 PM

    Good tips! Thanks:)
  • Linda 30 Jan, 01:46 PM

I shop at Grocery Outlet once a week.  What ever I can't get there, I buy elsewhere.  The employees are friendly and helpful.  Thanks for the meal plan ideas!
  • Tamara 31 Jan, 12:47 AM

Thank you so much for this. I menu plan and all that fun stuff I often forget the why I do it and this helped clear that up I appreciate it.
  • Sarah Williams 31 Jan, 07:50 AM

I already meal plan, but the suggestion to tackle changes in small peices is a great tip! I have a tendency to push on...head to brick. its just too much!
  • Karen Crabtree 31 Jan, 08:06 AM

I learned a long time ago about not shopping while hungry.  I used to do that and then come home with a bunch of things that I wanted to eat right that minute.  Of course I could only eat one.  Many times the cravings would fade but I was still stuck with a bunch of things that needed to be prepared within the next day or two and sometimes, those things would get wasted.  I am now starting to meal plan, though I know I could be better about it.  I no longer waste veggies (huge pet peeve) and when I see things starting to go, I hurry and cook em'.
  • Adrienne Hernandez 31 Jan, 10:45 AM

I'm gonna have to buckle down and actually do some planning to make the most of my money. Without meal planning, there's still unplanned spending and at non-coupon pricing. Makes my blood boil not to be able to use coupons!!
  • Michel 31 Jan, 11:34 AM

Grocery Outlet is so foreign to me, but I really do need to go in there more often. It's not close to me, but I could plan it.
  • Staci Sigmundson 31 Jan, 04:51 PM

I love it there.  It used to be horrible & now one of my favorite places  :0)

  • Elaine Richards 31 Jan, 05:01 PM

Thank you so much for this!
